Why is this new legislation so important? It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. Department officials promised to conduct fish and wildlife surveys, close some roads and seed them with grasses, help catch lawbreakers and issue permits. Fees collected are spent on improvements to the Weyerhaeuser property. Royce Meek of Broken Bow, vice president of the Oklahoma Wildlife Federation, said most sportsmen understand the need for the $16 permit. “There was grumbling about it, but all in all everyone thought it was a pretty cheap cost to be able to use the land, and have access to every bit of it,” Meek said Wednesday.

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing the creation of new regulations that expand the hunting of Canada geese in hopes of reducing the current resident population of 3.5 million by 1.2 million. As a result, the agency wants to allow states to undertake approved population control strategies, such as nest and egg destruction, trapping and culling programs and expanded hunting opportunities. “The service believes that the problems caused by resident Canada geese can be best addressed at the state level,” said agency director Steve Williams. “To that end, we are committed to providing state wildlife management agencies with as much flexibility as possible to address the issue.”

Hundreds of start-up businesses in New Zealand have their first go at reaching customers when they take a stall at the local Saturday or Sunday market. The customers are there, feedback is immediate, and the costs of a stall and set-up are minimal. Many remain market size, some grow into tidy little businesses, and others turn into multimillion-dollar companies. The path-finding Otara Market in Auckland, inspired by the retail habits of local Pacific Island residents, was one of the first off the block, beginning in 1977 when a cluster of people formed to sell goods from the boots of their cars. The concept became so popular that others quickly joined in to sell a broader range of produce including vegetables, clothes and crafts. BUSINESS MARKETINGNATURE AND CHARACTERISTICS OF THE BUSINESS MARKETThe first obvious difference is that there are significantly fewer customers in the business market than in the consumer market. These customers also buy in significantly larger quantities (e.g., tires by the thousands) and the prices of some of their single item purchases far exceed those of an individual consumer (e.g., millions of dollars for a new bridge). Finally, business customers in the same industry often tend to be located in a concentrated geographic region. For example, the Silicon Valley in California has a high concentration of firms in the high-tech industry.
Like any asset a business is only worth what the market is willing to pay. But timing is important too and although the market is currently very buoyant that might be set to change. Elizabeth Light looks at the current state of the businesses-for-sale market and at how businesses are valued. Business sales have boomed in the past couple of years and prices have increased. While the rises arent quite reaching the stratospheric heights seen in the residential and commercial property markets there have been sub- stantial rises in some business sectors. Just how big they are is hard to define as no statistics are collected for business sales. Geoff Smart, a business broker at Simes Ltd in Christchurch, points out that there are all sorts of businesses in many different industry sectors, and in different geographies, so the increases are not across-the-board.

Their argument is invariably thorough, and their research ranges widely, and admirably, from the logical and historical origins of money to free banking, and from long wave theories to socialist money. In spite of its virtues, and partly because of them, this book will probably not become an icon of the literature, although it will certainly become a major reference in the field (which may well be a better option). The reason is simple: Itoh and Lapavitsas probe very deeply into Marxs theory of money and credit, marshal evidence widely, and engage in a wide variety of debates, not least with Marx himself (eg., they criticise certain aspects of Marxs theory of money, on pp.37-40, and credit, on pp.64-5). The state Department of Toxic Substances Control is in charge of enforcing this law. In a posting on the agencys Web site, officials said they have already begun stepping up enforcement, both responding to consumer or worker complaints and conducting marketplace surveillance. However, the department wont be looking at dozens of companies that last year reached an agreement with then-Attorney General Bill Lockyer to limit lead content in the jewelry they make or sell.
